BBT Atlantic Hackathon x Ocean Hackathon®

BBT Atlantic Hackathon x Ocean Hackathon® is a 48-hour non-stop event allows participating teams to develop a prototype in response to challenges posed by different national and international entities.

The event, taking place for the in Portugal, will be held from October 17 to 19 in Peniche.

Until May 15, challenges can be submitted to participate in the Ocean Hackathon®, which will be held simultaneously in Peniche and 14 other cities worldwide.

The Ocean Hackathon® is an initiative of Campus Mondial de la Mer, Brest, France, which encourages data sharing, the use of new digital technologies, and entrepreneurial spirit in the field of Oceans.

It aims to create a community of stakeholders in marine science and technology (academia, research, economy, and institutional entities), promote innovation to address ocean-related issues, and develop new approaches to using public data collected by a wide range of R&D institutions.

The resulting projects enhance the value of marine data, often through its reuse. Since its launch in 2016, the Ocean Hackathon® has brought together a new community around the ocean and digital environments. Originally based in Brest, it expanded to other locations in 2019 and is now being held in Portugal for the second time.

The event is organized by the Peniche Hub of Hub Azul – Smart Ocean (Peniche Maritime Science and Technology Park) along with the project Blue Bio Techpreneurs (co-funded by the European Union), in partnership with Politécnico de Leiria, the Municipality of Peniche, and Hub Azul.

Challenge holders can be individuals or organizations and must be present during the event to work closely with the team. Multidisciplinary teams composed of students, researchers, faculty, and stakeholders will be put to the test.

Over 48 hours, they will develop a prototype to address the challenge posed by a national or international entity, with access to data sets and tools, as well as guidance from national and international mentors who are experts in the challenge area. These mentors can assist in developing the team’s ideas to the result through their experience and technical and scientific knowledge.

The construction of the prototype created in response to the needs of various entities and the reflection on its applicability will be based on databases available or provided by the organization to participants, resulting from an extensive international partnership. Data providers focus their efforts on improving data accessibility and understanding and are involved in supporting participants throughout the event.
